In 1991, the first international publication appeared that discussed the relationship between depression, inflammatory responses, and an overactive immune system (Hilgers et al., 1991).

Since then, it has become increasingly clear that depression and other psychiatric disorders are in fact psycho-neuro- immunological (PNI) diseases. That’s a mouthful to indicate that the mind as a whole (psycho), the nervous system (neuro) and the body’s immune system (immunology) together underlie psychiatric disorders.
